Avalanche! Conveyors as Art

Conveyors as Art: it’s not our usual application, but maybe we shouldn’t be surprised to find our Mini-Movers on gallery display. Our customers constantly intrigue us with the creative ways they put our mini-conveyors to use. When Los Angeles artist and sculptor Andrew Dominick first contacted us in fall 2009 about his plans for building an avalanche simulator, we knew we were in for a fun project.

“Providence Nature,” Dominick’s spring 2010 exhibition at California State University, Bakersfield’s Todd Madigan Gallery, featured large-scale sculptures depicting nature’s events. Dominick’s sculpture, “Avalanche” is powered by two Lite Series Mini-Mover conveyors, configured to circulate artificial snow up to and around the “mountaintop” at speeds of up to 60 feet per minute.

Considering that Mr. Dominick’s sculpture has included diverse media such as air blowers, aircraft cable and live snakes, we can’t be sure our Mini-Movers will star in another creation. But we’ve had our moment in the sun.

Drew Dominick’s artwork has exhibited nationally and internationally, most recently at Sandroni Rey in Los Angeles. For the past 10 years, he has taught sculpture and new genre at University of California Los Angeles, CSUB and CSU Long Beach.

2-Level “Paper-Mover” for Training Center

A vocational training center needed a solution for moving tangled heaps of scrap paper into a large shredder several feel above the shop floor. Being a non-profit organization, their budget was limited. So Whipple Mini-Mover gladly developed this custom two-level unit. We added a few touches to make sure that paper moved smoothly to the upper level, while ensuring that both ambulatory and wheelchair students could access the unit to get their work done easily.

She recently completed one year of in-house technical training on all aspects of assembly and quality testing of both standard and custom Mini-Mover conveyor products.

With Lori’ s 15 years experience in drafting, CAD, construction and customer service, she brings significant troubleshooting and consulting capabilities to the company’s Parts and Service Dept. Whether customers need routine maintenance recommendations or advice on solving application-related replacement parts issues, the company’s service desk can now provide fast and precise response.

Expansion of the company’s customer service capabilities is part of Whipple Mini-Movers’ initiative to support and respond to customers’ needs in today’s economic climate, whether it is for new conveyor purchase or maintenance of existing equipment due to budget cuts.

Cosmetics Maker Finds Package Coding Solution with Lite Series Conveyors

A major cosmetics manufacturer came to us with a container labeling problem. With a few modifications to our Lite Series conveyor, we agreed on a design that solved the problem. Each square container needed to be coded on the underside, and it made sense to accomplish this task via a dual belt configuration and a slotted slider bed.

The dual belts and slotted slider bed allow cosmetics jars to be coded on the underside, while being conveyed to a sorting station.

The integral 3/4-inch rails on the Lite Series conveyors keep the square jars perfectly aligned as they’re conveyed, allowing an exact “target” for the coding device located beneath the unit. Whipple customized the pulleys by machining in a collar to separate and aid in tracking of the belts. Another example of Mini Mover saying yes to your custom conveyor needs.
